not reveal, but I understand that the final outcome differs from the original 1957 3:10 to Yuma, upon which this film is based. I haven't seen that film, but here, as far as character motivations go, I didn't find a false note. There comes a point where Ben makes a big decision, and while drastic, it has been building up to this throughout the entire film and is fully earned. The ending manages to be at least somewhat surprising; there were plenty of routes it could've taken that it thankfully didn't, and really, it ends on the most satisfying note possible. Watching 3:10 to Yuma is watching a group of skilled and competent craftsmen providing us with an extremely solid movie. If it doesn't die at the box office thanks to its unfortunate early-September release, it could revitalize the Western genre. I say, bring 'em on.
Movie Grade: A-
Synopsis:
Small-time rancher Dan Evans (Bale) agrees to transport captured outlaw Ben Wade (Crowe) to a nearby town until the daily train can take him to Yuma for trial. Holed up in the same hotel, the two men engage in a battle of wills as the hours tick by. |
