Barbershop 2: Back In Business

Review By: Ebony Isaac

The sequel to 2002 box-office hit is a “go see” movie. The film re-unites the characters of the first movie, Ice Cube, Eve, Michael Ealy (the cute one ladies), Cedric the Entertainer and the rest of the boys in the Barbershop. Joining the cast this round is Queen Latifah. We’ll get to that later.

In a nutshell, Cedric lives up to his name, by providing incredible ad-libs and delivering the perfect one-liners that makes this film worthwhile. Directed by Tim Story, the film takes us back to the South-Side Chicago where new development plans threaten the small businesses in the neighborhood. The biggest scare is Nappy Cuts, “Super Cuts for the Black man” plans to build across the street from Calvin’s barbershop.

With a basketball court, high-tech equipment and loads more money Calvin, played by Cube, is in jeopardy of losing the shop to fierce competition. As the shop unites to stay in business, the movie goes into each of the barbers’ lives.

It’s not always funny, but it’s always entertaining. After last year’s controversy, the writers stayed true to barbershop barter and cover everything from R. Kelly to the D.C. Sniper to Luther. But when the laughs come, they come hard.

The Queen Latifah cameo in preparation for her forthcoming feature Beauty Shop, is a poor advertisement. Overall, however, the movie is a “go see.” You’ll laugh and have something to talk about.

Movie Grade: B+

Synopsis:

The sequel picks up where the original left off, with the same eclectic crowd joking, storytelling and working at Calvin's barbershop on the south side of Chicago. This time they look back at the origins of the shop. At the same time, they reflect on what has become of their neighborhood in the ensuing years.
