Journey to the Center of the Earth

OK, so is everyone ready to see Brendan Fraser battling evil Mummies that just won’t stay dead again? Ohh wait, no that’s not until next month - This month Brendan is venturing down to discover a new world within our own in Journey to the Center of the Earth!

I’m still not a fan of 3-D even though this was the very first 3-D film shot entirely in 3-D digital, a fact that made the cast and crew very proud, I still feel like the technology just isn’t perfected enough yet to make 3-D a reliable, believable medium. Wearing the glasses and waiting for those shots that are only there because it is 3-D, still takes away from the overall story and forces me out of the experience of watching it. But, that’s just me, I’m sure families with small children will love it! And to be sure, improvements have been made to the process that makes this film better than the last. A few of the effects had me jumping and sliding back in my seat a bit. I mean, who doesn’t want to see an enormous T-Rex barreling down towards you or be the sink for Brendan Fraser to spit in? (You’ll have to see the film to understand that last one).

Luckily for me Journey wasn’t all about its 3-D presentation, there was an actual story here and tons of fun filled family action adventure moments that made it a really enjoyable movie.

Brendan Fraser, who also served as executive producer for the very first time, plays Trevor Anderson, a geologist whose dwindling funding and decreasing class sizes are slowly making him obsolete at the university where he teaches. After discovering some notes that were made by his late brother, a man who was convinced that the writings of Jules Verne in the classic novel Journey to the Center of the Earth were actually based in fact, Trevor sets out to uncover the truth.

Along for the ride is his somewhat estranged nephew Sean, played by relative newcomer and sure-to-be-a-star Josh Hutcherson and their gorgeous Icelandic mountain guide Hannah the feisty Anita Briem. One mishap after another eventually lands them smack dab in the very center of the Earth where they have to fight to stay alive and somehow manage to make it back to the surface to tell everyone what they’ve discovered.

This film really was so much fun to watch. Fraser definitely has a knack for this kind
