Some will speculate that the other three girls are all actually just parts of Carrie; Samantha the youthful sex crazed side, Miranda the analytical, intelligent side and Charolette the conservative nurturing side. You can’t argue that if it were true these four ladies combined would make the perfect woman!

But I digress...back to The Movie! The film picks up four years after the six season long HBO series ended and we find everyone basically where they were when we left them; with the exception of Samantha who has moved to LA with her boyfriend and number one client underwear model sensation turned movie star, Smith Jarred (Jason Lewis).

Talk about making a film version of this story was rampant back in 04 when the series first ended and rumors were flying around in all sorts of directions about why it wasn’t getting made. When star and executive producer Parker finally said it was time the kinks were ironed out and creator Michael Patrick King locked himself away and wrote one hell of a screenplay! The challenges of what story to tell in the movie version were just the tip of the ice berg for this reunited creative team. They had to find a way to do what they had been doing for years, but in a grander scale worthy of the larger canvas they would be playing on – and they achieved it!

I’ve totally abused my press power for this one and have actually now seen it twice and I came away each time thinking how great it was to spend time with these old friends of mine. In fact, while some might say the almost two and a half hour running time might be a bit excessive, I could have definitely sat there for at least another half hour before ever looking at my watch.

The big question on everyone’s minds is does this movie succeed on both levels; as something fans will relish and also as a movie that can stand on its own for the uninitiated. I hate that last requirement. I’m not saying it fails to do it, but let’s be frank; I don’t really care if it does. If you are someone who doesn’t know the rich back story that was created in this world then there is no way you will ever appreciate it as much as those who do and that’s OK. Too often long running shows or film series are judged ‘unsuccessful’ because they don’t speak to that ‘cross over’ audience. Sometimes it’s enough that it more than satisfies the people that it is made for. Whether or not random boyfriend who gets dragged to the theater enjoys it is inconsequential.
