a clone of Ari Gold from Entourage, but instead, we get the polar opposite. Lazier writers wouldn't combine exactly the right amount of Hollywood satire and broad comedy.
The film does a good job making fun of all types of Hollywood actors, although there are a few direct targets. There's a quick scene of a TV interview in which Downey (in one of the few times he appears not as a black guy) does such a perfect impression of Russell Crowe talking ultra-seriously about "the craft" that I was practically on the floor.
A big star plays a surprisingly large cameo role as a vulgar studio executive; if you've read anything else about the movie, you probably know who it is, but in case you don't I won't give it away. At first I thought it would've been funnier if he'd just played himself, but by the time the credits roll, this guy owns the movie.
What else can I say besides there are a lot of laughs? I have no complaints. It's a perfectly-tuned script, the cast is uniformly terrific, and there are a lot of fun cameos and explosions. The other recent action-comedy, Pineapple Express, pales in comparison. Does that mean Stiller just stole comedy back from Apatow?
Movie Grade: A
Synopsis:
While shooting a big-budget war movie, a group of actors (Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr., and others) are forced to become soldiers in a real-life conflict.
