Wall-E and Wanted both scored explosive debuts which put the box office in very healthy shape heading into Independence Day weekend. As expected, Wall-E landed in the top spot with $62.5 million, scoring a nice uptick from Pixar's last opening, Ratatouille, which hit $47 million. The big surprise, however, was the wildly successful opening of Wanted, which scored an estimated $51.1 million to make it Angelina Jolie's biggest opener ever, and one of the most successful R-rated openings of all time. The top ten estimates, in millions:
With two films dominating the marketplace, the rest of the top ten dropped more heavily than normal. Last week's champ Get Smart fell an acceptable 48% to $20 million and has banked $77 million in ten days. It should close out at around $120-130 million. By contrast, its partner last weekend, The Love Guru, plummeted 60% from an already weak debut and has made only $25 million to date. Budgeted at $62 million, it looks to leave theaters before it makes even $40 million.
Kung Fu Panda was hit hard by the arrival of Wall-E and dropped 47%, its largest yet, to $11.7 million. It's still on course to make roughly $210 million. The Incredible Hulk and The Happening both free-fell by around 60% each. Hulk will end up selling less tickets than its derided 2003 predecessor, while The Happening is feeling the blunt of horrible audience reactions and should top out at $70 million.
The smallest drop in the top ten belonged to Indiana Jones, whose total on Sunday stood at $299.9 million. By now, it has passed the $300 mark, the second film of 2008 (after Iron Man) to do so. ❏
