Read no further if you haven't yet seen the last-ever episode of The Sopranos.
As we all know now, the show ended not with a bang but with...nothing. Tony, Carmela, and A.J. sit in a diner. Meadow's parking the car outside. Someone walks by them, eyes them suspiciously, and then goes into the bathroom. The tension is killing us. Meadow comes in. And then...nothing. Blackout. That was it. The end.
And that was exactly how creator David Chase wanted it. To avoid what would surely be a vocal response (many people loved it; some, like the New York Post, whined incessently), Chase went on a trip to France and turned off his phone. He broke his silence with only one outlet this morning: the Star Ledger of Newark, New Jersey.
"I have no interest in explaining, defending, reinterpreting, or adding to what is there," he is quoted as saying. "People get the impression that you're trying to (mess) with them, and it's not true. You're trying to entertain them," he said. "Anybody who wants to watch it, it's all there."
He also commented on the possibility (or lack thereof) of a movie: "I don't think about it much. I never say never. An idea could pop into my head where I would go, 'Wow, that would make a great movie,' but I doubt it. I'm not being coy. If something appeared that really made a good 'Sopranos' movie and you could invest in it and everybody else wanted to do it, I would do it. But I think we've kind of said it and done it." |
