Kate Winslet has joined Stephen Daldry's The Reader in place of Nicole Kidman, who had to drop out because of her pregnancy with husband Keith Urban.

"Re-joined" might be the better word because Winslet was actually the original choice to star in the project, according to Variety. Scheduling conflicts with Winslet's Revolutionary Road initially were in the way, but with shooting on that film now over, she's free to do Reader.

The project, co-starring Ralph Fiennes and German unknown David Kross, deals with a teenager who falls for an "enigmatic older woman" in postwar Germany.

Daldry has directed exactly two full-length films: The Hours and Billy Elliot, both of which got him Academy Award nominations. We'll see if he can continue the streak.
