Anton Yelchin is "in negotiations" to play Pavel Chekov in the upcoming J.J. Abrams-directed Star Trek, according to the Hollywood Reporter. He'll join Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy, the only other two actors cast so far (and both apparently set to play Spock).

The Chekov character wasn't introduced until the second season of the original TV series, and after a cast list was leaked online without his name included, it was unknown whether the character would be in the film at all. Yelchin's casting lays those doubts to rest, and also reinforces the persistent assumption that the film will take place during the early days of the Enterprise crew.

Yelchin's name may be unfamiliar at the moment, but he's no stranger to the business; he last appeared in Alpha Dog, was a regular on the cable series Huff, and is the star of the upcoming flick Charlie Bartlett.
