Mega-director Peter Jackson has begun shopping his screenplay for The Lovely Bones, an adaptation of the bestselling novel, to all of the major Hollywood studios. Except New Line, that is.

Since King Kong's release, Jackson has publicly said that he wants to make Bones his next project. Now that the script, written by Jackson and his regular team of Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, is finished, things can move forward if a studio bites.

The two-year wait between now and Kong's release can be attributed to more than just fine-tuning the script. A lawsuit with New Line Cinema over auditing on Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy, which resulted in a much-publicized pissing match between Jackson and New Line chief Bob Shaye, didn't help move along matters (and is why New Line isn't getting shown the Bones script. Additionally, Jackson had been in the midst of producing duties for the Halo film adaptation, which has since fizzled.

The Lovely Bones centers around a fourteen year old girl who is brutally murdered. She explores Heaven and looks down on her family and her killer as they cope with the aftermath of her death. The novel was written by Alice Sebold.
