According to estimates, Spider-Man 3 kicked off the summer season on Friday by grossing 59 million dollars. It opened in 4,252 theaters - the most ever - and had a per-theater average of $13,876.
Many analysts predicted it to have the highest grossing opening weekend of all time, and it's still on course for that, although it will be close. The current record-holder, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, grossed 55.8 million on it's first day, last July, on its way to 135.6 million for the weekend.
Depending on how well it holds, Spider-Man 3 could approach a 150 million weekend but will most likely settle with about 142 million.
Mind you this is all in the United States - the film is already making a killing overseas. Looks like the production budget of over 250 million dollars was somewhat justified. |
