This weekend's top ten (in millions):
Disturbia powered its way to a surprise #1 opening this weekend, making an estimated 23 million dollars nationwide. Shia LaBeouf is having a great week - he just hosted SNL and secured the deal to star in the fourth Indiana Jones film. Disturbia may have its simple thriller concept to thank more than LaBeouf for its success, but his ever-raising profile will now almost certainly turn him into a major star.
Other new releases didn't fare quite as well. Perfect Stranger bowed to a bad 11.5, which I guess makes LaBeouf and co-stars David Morse and Carrie-Anne Moss more bankable than Halle Berry and Bruce Willis. Actually, the failure is probably due to the lack of a compelling storyline and the general late-April slowdown before the summer heats up.
The much-delayed Pathfinder bowed to 4.8 million, coming in at sixth. While the movie wasn't expected to do very good, sixth place almost can be considered decent compared to the final three new releases this weekend: Redline, Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters, and Slow Burn. All of those opened outside the top ten to 4.0 million, 3.1 million, and a laughable $805,000, respectively.
Many holdovers, including the unstoppable Wild Hogs, had soft declines of 30-40%. The big exception was Grindhouse, which collapsed 63% and can now almost be described as a fiasco.
In brighter news, 300 finally broke through the 200 million mark. Also, Mike White's Molly Shannon-starring indie Year of the Dog made 112k from just seven theaters for a great 16k per-theater average. |
