New released failed to catch on this weekend as Disturbia remained the #1 film in the U.S. for the second week in a row. Overall the market was quite sluggish, as presumably moviegoers are too busy gearing up for Spider-Man 3 to care about the umpteenth horror release or an Adam Brody chick flick.

Disturbia took an estimated 13.5 million, dropping less than 40% from last weekend. Coming in second was the Anthony Hopkins/Ryan Gosling thriller Fracture, which earned a respectable 11.2 million. That's on a par with other recent films to target adult audiences, such as February's Breach, which opened with 12.3 million. Also doing well in a more limited release was Hot Fuzz, already a huge hit in Britain, which made 5.8 million from 825 theaters. That's almost double the opening gross of the Fuzz creative team's last outing, Shaun of the Dead.

Other new releases didn't do quite as well. Luke Wilson continued his wildly spotty track record with the underwhelming 7.6 millon for the horror film Vacancy. Last year it seemed like every horror movie was a success, and this year the flops just keep coming - even with the starpower of Wilson and Kate Beckinsale (above). In the Land of Women, meanwhile, barely made a dent with 4.9 million. Expect a quick trip to DVD.

Four films that already flopped in weekends past just kept on flopping this weekend. Grindhouse, Perfect Stranger, Pathfinder, and The Reaping all plummeted by about 65% this weekend. One can only imagine that the complete lack of interest in so many current movies is undoubtedly making studio heads pray for the summer movie season to come faster.
